Standards-based projects infuse technology literacy and 21st Century skills into any curriculum

Standards-based projects infuse technology into any curriculum

Inspiring communication, collaboration, and original thinking, TechSteps technology integration projects enrich a standards-based curriculum with real-world relevance, motivating each student to explore, investigate, and understand the world they live in.
  • Engage students, improve outcomes, and empower teachers with inquiry-based technology education integration activities

TechSteps is a district-wide technology literacy curriculum and assessment tool that engages students in motivating learning experiences with integration activities that infuse technology and 21st Century learning into any standards-based curriculum.

TechSteps provides educators with six rigorous standards-based technology integration activities at each grade level that immerse students in project-based, active learning, allowing them to work together to solve complex, real-world problems and challenges. Each well-design challenge guides students in using open ended real-world technology applications to design and build information products or presentations that communicate their best thinking. These artifacts provide an authentic demonstration of technology literacy proficiency and 21st Century skills development while also generating all the data needed for reporting purposes.

  • Integrate 21st Century and technology education skills into core instruction

TechSteps seamlessly delivers core academic content while incorporating technology education and 21st Century skills into any K-8 curriculum.

The core K-8 TechSteps curriculum is comprised of a set of six developmentally sequenced electronic activity books that provide all the materials and resources needed to develop, implement, and monitor 21st Century learning in every classroom. Each activity book presents an inquiry-based Mathematics, Science, Language Arts, or Social Studies challenge, and then guides students in using real-world applications and digital tools to design, build, analyze, conceptualize, and solve rigorous real-world challenges.

TechSteps helps to prepare all students to be true 21st Century learners with the ability to solve problems, communicate, and collaborate and to use technology in meaningful ways to accelerate learning, and demonstrate 21st Century competencies such as creativity, higher order thinking, and innovation.

  • Use performance-based assessment to provide evidence of subject matter, technology literacy, and 21st Century skills development

TechSteps utilizes a performance-based evaluation system and provides all the resources necessary to implement, manage, and assess technology and information literacy development. Classroom rubrics tied to each activity are used to inform learning, generate actionable feedback, and show evidence of both core subject matter and technology literacy development. These authentic performance-based assessments provide a valid indication of both 21st Century skills development and technology proficiency while also generating the reports needed for all levels of data-driven decision making.

  • Immerse students in rigorous learning with classroom-ready technology projects

TechSteps engages students in authentic learning projects that require them to employ subject area knowledge to provide solutions to real-world problems. When working with the TechSteps curriculum, students follow a comprehensive scope and sequence of skills, from a simple Kindergarten language arts activity that teaches students how to create a PowerPoint photo and text slide in order to contribute to a class book; to a 5th grade research challenge that requires students to build a collaborative database to track and analyze scientific inventions; to an 8th grade mathematics modeling challenge that guides students in using an Excel scatter plot to investigate the relationships between real-time house size and price data determined from the Internet. Every challenge is carefully planned, managed, and assessed to increase each student’s understanding of key academic content, development of 21st Century skills, and ability to use technology to create high-quality, authentic products and presentations.

  • Library of additional classroom-ready integration activities

A supplemental library of additional technology integration activities, without assessment and reporting tools, is also available.

  • Aligned with NETS*S, State, and Common Core State Standards

TechStep is built on the National Education Technology Standards for Students (NETS*S) and is aligned with state and Common Core State Standards.

Teacher and school principal enthusiasm and commitment to TechSteps is high. It is seen as a realistic model for, and accessible pathway toward, 21st Century learning. Educators say it brings together principles and practices such as understanding by design, project-based learning continuum, and assessment for learning.
